Up The Creek BLT, Vail, Colorado
Is your bacon Up The Creek?
I was in Vail this weekend for a family occasion. Now, Vail is not my exactly my kind of town, being a pretty upscale place and I'm a pretty down-home guy. Lots of restaurants have crazy tapas-style dainty meals, or weird new-fusion themes or are just plain ridiculous (and expensive).
At lunch today we went by Up The Creek, which is really nice because it's right next to the Eagle River and is a great ambiance on a hot summer day. Sure, they have lots of gourmet dishes, but I was thrilled to find your basic BLT on whole wheat with fries. I was all in.
When it arrived, I was thrilled to find it was exactly as practical and normal as I had hoped. I ordered it without mayo (never liked the stuff) and they got that right. Some people think BLT is too dry without mayo, but the tomato added the needed juices. The lettuce was crispy and fresh and the wheat bread was nice and chewy. Of course, I'm teasing you and taunting you by holding back on what you really want to know about. The Bacon.
The bacon was awesome. So many places try to pass off such cruddy bacon, especially if it's a sub-part of the main entree. This bacon was the star of the show and could have stood alone. It was THICK and meaty, cooked nicely to perfection. I like bacon crispy (not wiggly and raw) and this was. It wasn't dry, but it had a satisfying crunch from the thickness. There were probably five or six medium size strips on the sandwich, guaranteeing a savory experience in every bite.
I polished the whole thing off. Bar none, this was one of the best BLTs I've had in a long while. I wouldn't have changed a thing about it. I know what I'm having next time I'm in Vail.
